The search for gauranteed and affordable search engine positions is increasingly becoming a holy grail regardless of an organisations business.

Although it is not possible to gaurantee top search engine rankings, it is possible to obtain consistently good search engine results using proven effective search engine optimisation and online marketing techniques.

Search engine optimisation is no longer an option when it comes to your website, it is a necessity.

Search engine marketing

Search Engine Marketing or Search Engine Optimisation is all about getting high search engine ranking. Search Engine Optimisation is the process of promoting a business or organisation online to achieve top search engine ranking using relevant , targeted keyphrases.

Commonly approx 80% of people discover a website for the first time by using search engines.

There are principally two methods of search engine marketing to increase your profile within search engine results.

Free search engine placement

Most search engines will allow a website to be listed free of charge, this can work out extremely cost effective especially if you are on a tight marketing budget. However this is inherent on how the website is created and relies upon optimising pages for specific terms to promote a company's / organisations products or services.

Paid placement/ pay per click services

For competitive keyphrases and terms, it can be vey difficult to get good search engine placement, so search engines and a number of other online organisations offer to promote your website via paying for high profile placement or sponsored links.

The most common example is Google Adwords, which displays an advert of your website based upon key words on the first page of its search engine results. Apart froma small setup fee, you only pay for the number of times a visitor actually selects your advert and arrives at your site, hence the term Pay Per Click. The price for key search terms varies depending upon their marketability and how much other people ar ewilling to pay for them.

Paid placement programmes are similar in that they are based upon how much traffic is generated, but rely on a third party such as Overture or e-spotting to display your directory listing within the main Google results.

How to use search engine marketing effectively

Their is only one thing to say and that is Research, research and you've guessed it more research. Whether you are looking to embark on a paid Adwords campaign or want to exploit your search engine positions to their fullest, you need to be aware of how people find your products or services and how your competitors are being found.

The starting point is to identify the niches and categories your products or services occupy and identify your different types of consumers and create a list of keywords. The next stage is to research these keywords and to identify the specific search terms people are actually using to search for your products or services.
